Stay/Registration
EU citizens have the right to enter Germany and reside there. They do not need a residence permit or a visa. All they need is a valid national ID card or passport.
During the first 3 months, any EU citizen may reside in another EU country without restrictions.
For stays longer than 3 months, the following applies:
- Employees and self-employed individuals have an unconditional right of residence.
- Job seekers may stay for longer than 6 months if they continue to look for employment in Germany and have a reasonable prospect of finding work.
In principle, any EU citizen who is not employed may stay in Germany indefinitely provided they have sufficient financial means and health insurance coverage.
Regardless of this, there is a registration requirement in Germany—anyone staying in Germany or moving into a residence must register with the local municipal office within 14 days.
